From September in the first pavilion of the Museum has a permanent exhibition dedicated to its history from inception to present day and the history of the capital — from the arrival of the gas pipeline and electricity before the opening of the newest metro stations.

During its more than centenary history the Museum of Moscow changed its name and direction. Opened in 1896 as the Museum of the city economy, he managed to visit Moscow communal Museum, and the Museum of history and reconstruction of Moscow and the Museum of city history of Moscow. Its modern life started in 2009, after moving to the territory of the Provision warehouses on Zubovsky Boulevard.

Ten years later the Museum of Moscow opens a new page with a new permanent free exhibition, “the Museum of Moscow. Reference point” depicting the intersections of the history of the Museum and the capital. How to watch the exhibition — in a joint material mos.ru and the Agency “Moscow”.

Updated space

Visitors of the first pavilion of the Museum of Moscow on the threshold meets the smell of the new wood flooring. Just a few months ago, there was only a closet, small Desk and an exhibition hall for temporary exhibitions. Most of the space was occupied by a box that hid the arches and beams of the nineteenth century. Its removal opened not only a new free space, but also a rich industrial past of the building.

The renewed site was a place a small coffee shop, and the hall was transformed into a modern recreation area — along one wall stretched a long bench, near her are a few tables. Nearby there are outlets and USB outlets, allowing visitors to charge your gadgets.

“The Museum is geographically very conveniently located, near two subway station. Using our yard is a good transit area — a meeting place not only Museum visitors, but also residents of the area, — says one of the curators of the exhibition Denis Romodin. — So here we’ve done all season pad, which can work in winter, so people came, drank coffee, could meet and discuss something”.

Updated space precedes the entrance to the newly opened exhibition. “Before the big renovation we wanted to do an exhibition dedicated to the history Museum of Moscow. Previously, we have no information about this was provided — people visited the exhibition, but didn’t realize where it came,” — said the curator.

Every month, new exhibits

A new exhibit at the Museum called continuously-time. This is for two reasons. First, the exhibition can not be called fully permanent — it will be held prior to the resumption of repair, and secondly, the exhibition consists of two parts, and one of them will be updated every month.

The time part of the exhibition tells about historical and current events that are important for the capital of memorials. The September showcase devoted to the city Day — theme of the month were objects of the Soviet era, associated with the toponym “Moscow”. The display shows the eponymous radio and typewriter, and next to them are the spirits of “Red Moscow” and the book of Vladimir Gilyarovsky’s “Moscow and Muscovites”, the glass hanging original letters, taken from the facade of the old building of the hotel “Moscow”.

The following may be the opening of the first lines of the Moscow Central diameters and exhibits dedicated to the development of Metropolitan public transport, and the establishment of the metro.

The rich history of the Museum of Moscow

The exhibition fits in a small room cubical. Around the perimeter is the timeline, which marked the most important date in the history of the Museum and Moscow.

The starting point for the history of the Museum was 1896 — the year of the all-Russia industrial and art exhibition in Nizhny Novgorod. For it was lined up dozens of pavilions, telling about the success of regions of the Russian Empire. After the exhibition the exhibits of the Moscow Department became the basis for the exposition of the new Museum of the city economy.

In those years Moscow actively changed, the city had the water, gas, electricity. The Museum recorded all the innovations. In Soviet times he continued to serve as a showcase of the updates here Muscovites learned about what is underground and how it will work, considered layouts and projects the first of Khrushchev.

Over its 123-year history, the Museum changed its name and address. From year to year, the Museum grew, there were new branches. Each of these events is reflected in the exposition of the relevant artifacts.

In addition to the exhibits associated with the Museum, the exhibition features many objects that tell about the history of the city: among them a fragment of incendiary bombs of the great Patriotic war, the layout of the mausoleum of Lenin, a collection of mementos of the summer Olympics of 1980 and other.

The building of the Museum of Moscow today

Until 2009, the Museum was housed in the Church of St. John the theologian under the Elm, but the expansion of the funds demanded a more spacious room. Among the candidates was Petrovsky Palace and Novo-Catherine hospital in Strastnoy Boulevard. At the same time for the Ministry of defence built a new building of depot of the General staff, which was located in the Proviantsky warehouses. Applicants for the empty building was enough — there could be a house dance, and ballet school. To adapt the space to meet their needs was not easy, hence the idea to transfer all three buildings of the Museum of Moscow.

Provision warehouses appeared on the map of the capital in the thirties of the XIX century. Food nearby military units were kept here for nearly 100 years until in the 1930s the building of the warehouses was converted into garages. How, then, looked historic rooms can be seen in the exhibition “starting Point”.

Before the move it was necessary to carry out minor repairs — a legacy from the previous owners of the Museum went to the car wash, maintenance pits, which appeared in the courts in the mid-twentieth century. In addition, during the restoration had to cut several layers of concrete and asphalt-impregnated with lubricating oil and fuel oil. The area was tidied up some years — their collection of the Museum moved in 2011. Repair of Proviantsky warehouses have not yet finished, the complex has yet to change.

“This exhibition should be the starting point for future reconstruction. The building, which in the mid-twentieth century has been converted into a garage complex, today is not suitable for permanent exposure and demand restoration of the historical appearance, — says Denis Romodin. — Working in indoor conditions, has a rich history, we are forced to adapt their structure. On the one hand, it brings some difficulties, and with another — it is also very interesting work.”

Exposure “A point of reference. The Museum Of Moscow” opened in the first pavilion of the Museum from 7 September daily, except Monday, during the opening hours of the Museum. Admission is free.
