Portsmouth City Council’s Housing, Neighbourhood and Building Directorate hosted the inaugural apprentice recognition event at Portsmouth Central Library last week. Recently qualified RICS Chartered Surveyors from Portsmouth City Council were awarded certificates as well as apprentices from key contractors; Comsev, Corrigenda, Liberty and Mountjoy. Councillors, senior managers, contractors and staff members were in attendance.
In total, 13 apprentices were presented with certificates having completed courses in plumbing, gas safety, building maintenance and building surveying.
Apprenticeships were completed over a period of one to three years depending on the qualification and often required on-the-job training as well as a formal examination.
Assistant Director of Building Services Meredydd Hughes addressed the audience, outlining Portsmouth City Council Building Services’ commitment to investing in staff and highlighting the importance of retaining newly qualified staff members.
Managing Directors and CEO’s from each contractor organisation spoke to the audience about the vital work they carry out within Portsmouth and Havant. They explained the positive impact that their apprentices have had on their service delivery within Portsmouth.
In attendance were Councillors Gerald Vernon-Jackson, Darren Sanders and Scott Payter-Harris.
Councillor Sanders, the Council’s Cabinet Member for Housing said:
“It is fantastic to recognise and celebrate new apprentices from both Portsmouth City Council and our key contractors at this event.
“Investing in our staff, whilst endorsing those contractors who do the same, will help us to maintain and improve our properties within Portsmouth long into the future.”
Director of Housing, Neighbourhoods and Building Services James Hill presented certificates to all newly qualified apprentices.
Each of the four key contractors are responsible for different areas of building and property repairs, servicing and maintenance around the city of Portsmouth and Havant.
The event will now be hosted annually and will be a key date for staff, councillors and contractors to celebrate the achievements of their newest staff members whilst providing a great opportunity to engage with different stakeholders from around Portsmouth.
