Will Hodgman, Premier & Minister for Tourism
Tasmania’s nation-leading tourism and hospitality industry is one of our greatest competitive strengths and my Government is its strongest supporter.
On World Tourism Day, we celebrate Tourism and Jobs: A better future for all and nowhere is this more evident than in Tasmania, where it is projected tourism has the potential to create thousands of additional jobs across the state by 2030.
Our tourism industry employs around 42,800 Tasmanians, or about 17 per cent of the state’s total employment, which is the highest level of any state in the nation.
That’s why my Government is so strongly committed to tourism, because it creates jobs in every corner of our State.
Data released yesterday confirms the number of visitors has grown and they are spending record amounts while they are here.
Furthermore, Deloitte Access forecasts that visitor spending could more than double to $5 billion a year, and 5,000 to 10,000 more tourism jobs be created by 2030.
We cannot afford to take our tourism success for granted, which is why we are now working on the next stage of the T21 Visitor Economy Strategy in partnership with industry, to guide the next exciting chapter of Tasmania’s tourism success story.
