SDLP Leader Colum Eastwood MLA has called on the British Government to clearly outline that they will comply with the terms of the Bann Act and request an extension to Article 50 to avoid a no-deal Brexit at the end of October. The Foyle MLA said that a warning from former Prime Minister John Major that the British Government may seek to ‘sidestep’ the law must be taken seriously.

He said:

“The current British Prime Minister has been exposed as a liar, a cheat and a man who is willing to act unlawfully to silence his critics and suspend democratic scrutiny of his government. There are no depths he won’t plumb to deliver a hard Brexit at the end of October.

“John Major’s warning today that the British Government may attempt to ‘sidestep’ legislation forcing Johnson to request an extension to Article 50 should be taken seriously. Boris Johnson must say categorically that he will comply with the law, including seeking an extension should a deal not be possible in the interim.

“This is not a game. It’s not a Netflix political drama. This will ruin the livelihoods of real people and industries in the North. It is far too serious. That’s why we need MPs who will take the fight to Johnson and his government, not the weak nodding dogs in the DUP or the hurlers from the ditch in Sinn Féin.
