DEFIANCE, Mo—Deer hunting has a long tradition of providing food for the table. There are certain steps though that hunters should take to ensure they are preparing and handling their deer meat safely.
The Missouri Department of Conservation’s (MDC) August A. Busch Shooting Range and Outdoor Education Center in Defiance is holding a Field to Freezer class Monday Oct. 7 from 6-8:30 p.m. In addition to covering field considerations, the course is designed to enable hunters to save money and gain satisfaction by processing the deer for themselves after the hunt.
Hunters will learn all the steps necessary to process deer meat on their own. The class will help guide participants from the first moment immediately after harvesting a deer by discussing the steps to properly field dress the animal in the field. The class also includes a live demonstration showing how to skin and butcher a deer in simple easy steps with minimum equipment. MDC instructors will also offer tips to ensure that hunters get the best possible quality venison from their hunt.
Field to Freezer is open to ages nine and up. The class is free with all materials provided by MDC, however advanced online registration is required at https://short.mdc.mo.gov/ZQ9.
The August A. Busch Shooting Range and Outdoor Education Center is located at 3550 Route D in Defiance, approximately five miles west of Highway 94.
