Barbara Keeley MP, Shadow Cabinet Minister for Mental Health and Social Care, commenting on Boris Johnson’s announcement on the recruitment of Mental Health Specialist Nurses, said:
“Since the Tories and Lib Dems came into government, 6,000 Specialist Mental Health nurses have been lost, and today Boris Johnson has merely repeated an old announcement about trying to recruit more. The Tories still have no credible plan to recruit the specialist Mental Health and Learning Disability nurses that the NHS needs.
“Shortages of mental health nurses and beds often mean that patients have to be sent hundreds of miles from their homes and families to receive treatment. That’s an appallingly stressful experience for so many people, and it damages their recovery.
“You can’t trust the Tories with the NHS, but Labour will bring back Nursing Bursaries to help this vital recruitment.”
