On the eve of the 150th anniversary of the death of the frigate “Oleg” in the Kronstadt naval Cathedral held a memorial service for the sailors who died in peacetime in the performance of official duties. It was attended by the students of the Nakhimov naval school and the Kronstadt naval cadet corps and cadets of the naval Polytechnic Institute.

After the memorial service the staff of the branch of the Central naval Museum “Kronstadt naval Cathedral” spoke about the history of the frigate “Oleg”.

In 2019 marks 150 years since the death of the frigate “Oleg”. 57-gun ship was laid down on the Kronstadt shipyard in 1858. Launched in 1860. Artillery weapons, unusually powerful for its time, was surprised contemporaries. 60-pound cannon could hurl projectiles weighing 17 kg at a distance of two nautical miles.

A series of frigates of this project was the last of the wooden sailing ships with smoothbore, charging out of the barrel guns.
