Festival patron and chef Hywel Jones from Lucknam Park Hotel & Spa

Newport is getting ready to welcome thousands of people to the city on Saturday for the popular annual FREE Newport Food Festival.

The event, now in its ninth year, has attracted more than 75 stallholders who will be displaying a wide variety of the best of Welsh cuisine and specialist drinks.

And for those lovers of good food what better way to experience what is on offer by attending one of the many chef demos taking place at a variety of venues around the city.

The demos kick off with the popular Teenchef final, sponsored by the Celtic Manor,  with youngsters displaying their culinary best when they take part in the contest being staged in the Newport Market from 11am.

Festival patron and chef Hywel Jones from Lucknam Park Hotel & Spa will kick off the senior chef demos, also at Newport Market, from noon with Matt Waldron of the Stackpole Inn getting ready to show off his skills at 1pm followed by Adam Whittle of Newbridge on Usk at 2pm.

Rounding up the demos at the market at 3pm will be Ben Periam of The Pod.

Pobl Group offices in High Street will also be a busy hub of cooking when five different chefs show off their wares on the day.

The fun starts at 11.30am with Anil Karhadkhar from Curry on the Curve, followed by James Sommerin representing his own restaurant with a demo at 12.30pm.

Anthony Miller of the city’s Wagamama restaurant is due on stage at 1.30pm and then Steve White of The Sorting Rooms will be cooking up a storm from 2.30pm followed by Gavin Horton of Horton’s Coffee together with Clifton Coffee demonstrating coffee art.

Gavin will be fresh from demos at his own coffee shop over the City Footbridge with demos at his premises earlier in the day at 11am, noon and 1pm.

Friars Walk will also be busy with chef demos with a wide variety of cooking skills being displayed.

At 11am No Bones Jones will be cooking with a second demo from a Wagamama chef taking to the stage from noon.

TV star Dirty Vegan, Matt Pritchard will be at Friars Walk on the demo platform at 1pm with dishes many will have seen on his popular TV show.

At 2pm chefs from Las Iguanas will be taking to the stage followed by chefs from Chiquitos at 3pm ending with a display by Lisa Fearn from Y Sied at 4pm. 

With such a fantastic display of talent going on show at the food festival there will be something for everyone.
