SDLP Health and Mental Health Spokesperson Mark H Durkan MLA has called for a ban on the harmful practice of conversion therapy in Northern Ireland. The Foyle MLA has written to the Chair and Chief Executive of the Health and Social Care Board about the matter.
“Last year, the British Government announced its intention to introduce a legislative ban on conversion therapy – the practice of attempting to change an individual’s sexuality or gender identity through medical treatment or psychotherapy. It is an abhorrent practice that should become a note in our history, no longer legitimised in health settings.
“The news today that an extreme aversion therapy was used by Queen’s University is a further example of the detrimental impact this practice has on the wellbeing of those subjected to it.
“I have written to the Chair and Chief Executive of the Health and Social Care Board to ensure that no health institution in the North takes part in this practice and to encourage the HSCB to sign a Memorandum of Understanding on Conversion Therapy, endorsed by the NHS in England and Scotland, committing to ending this ‘therapy’ and providing more support to sexually and gender diverse people.”
