Tony Lloyd MP, Labour’s Shadow Secretary of State for Northern Ireland, commenting on the Harland and Wolff announcement said,
“This is fantastic news for the staff and their families at Harland and Wolff.
“This morning’s announcement is a vote of confidence in the future of manufacturing in Northern Ireland.
“I would like to pay tribute to the role of both Unite and GMB trade unions. When Harland and Wolff was in need, the Government refused to act, but the workforce and unions stood together resolute.
“This announcement is tribute to their strength and the solidarity shown across the wider labour movement.
“In the coming days and months, questions will be asked about why the government did so little, particularly with the lack of a devolved government in Northern Ireland, but today is about the success of the tireless campaigning of the workforce and the huge relief felt by so many in East Belfast and beyond.”
