Major reinforcement works to extend the life of a Peterborough road bridge have been completed ahead of schedule.
The works to strengthen six of the eight supporting piers of Nene Bridge, which carries the Frank Perkins parkway over the River Nene, began in April 2018 and finished earlier this month, one month ahead of schedule. Works to the remaining two piers are currently scheduled to be commence in 2020, with access being gained from the opposite river bank.
Over the last 17 months, over 360 tonnes of reinforced concrete has been used to extend the life of the bridge, which was originally built in 1984.
Strengthening modifications were carried out, with hundreds of steel bars wrapped around each of the unique V-shaped pillars to create a complex reinforced concrete jacket that supplements the unique identity of the structure. As two of the supporting piers are positioned within the River Nene, a temporary dam was also built so that they could be accessed.
The work was carried out by Skanska in partnership with Peterborough City Council and was finished ahead of deadline, without road closures and with no disruption for the thousands of motorists who use this essential Peterborough road every day. Now the reinforced pillars are complete, the life of the bridge has been extended for around 50 years.
Councillor Peter Hiller, Peterborough City Council’s cabinet member for growth, planning and economic development, said: “The bridge is a key part of the city’s road network, carrying a significant number of vehicles each day and it is imperative for it to be in good condition.
“This vital complex and extensive work was completed on time and without any disruption at all for motorists, which is a staggering feat of engineering. It will ensure the bridge can continue to be used for decades to come.”
