Waka Kotahi NZ Transport Agency is calling for Registrations of Interest (ROI) for the development of the Auckland Harbour Bridge Shared Path.

Together, the Auckland Harbour Bridge Shared Path and SeaPath will create a seamless walking and cycling connection between the city and North Shore. The Auckland Harbour Bridge section will start in Westhaven before crossing the Waitemata Harbour and then connect to the SeaPath section which extends to Takapuna. This enduring link will provide choice as to how Aucklanders on either side of the harbour get to work, connect with family and friends and access services.

To progress the Auckland Harbour Bridge section, the Transport Agency is looking for pre-qualified teams of designers and contractors who have experience working on the design and delivery of complex steel girder and concrete bridge projects.

NZ Transport Agency Senior Manager Project Delivery Andy Thackwray says the successful team will form an alliance and be expected to work collaboratively, innovatively and smartly with the project construction team, combining the skills and requirements of designers with those of the construction team early on.

“This work will help finalise the detailed design of the preferred option which was shared with partners, stakeholders and community over the course of this year.

“Seeking early contractor involvement while finalising the detailed design of the preferred option will help us move forward with this project quickly, as the design can be developed with input from the construction team to ensure the best option is designed, and then built,” Mr Thackwray says.

The alliance delivery model specified by the ROI involves a group of companies submitting their interests for involvement together. Mr Thackwray says this process has proven successful on other Transport Agency projects including Auckland’s Northern Corridor Improvements project.

Teams have until 11 November to submit their Registrations of Interest, and the Transport Agency will select a short list by the end of January 2020. Subject to funding approval, the Transport Agency will then work with the shortlisted teams between February and June 2020 to review their detailed submissions and select a preferred team. The Transport Agency will then work directly with the preferred team to finalise the design and prepare for the earliest possible construction start in December 2020. Construction of the shared path is expected to take two and a half years.

“It is a priority for the Transport Agency to coordinate the design and delivery of the Auckland Harbour Bridge and SeaPath sections of the path to create the best outcomes for the community and for the people who will use this walking and cycling route between Westhaven and Takapuna,” Mr Thackwray says.
