The Republic of France has issued the following statement:
Q: President Donald Trump just announced that the United States wants a major arms control treaty (covering nuclear weapons) with Russia, China and a few other countries. Can you comment on this initiative? Does France support it, and might it be willing to take part in the preparation of this document or documents?
A: France reiterates its commitment to arms control instruments, which help guarantee strategic stability.
The United States and Russia, which still possess almost 95% of the world’s nuclear weapons, bear the largest share of responsibility for preserving existing conventional and nuclear arms control instruments.
France therefore encourages Russia and the United States to extend the New START Treaty on their strategic nuclear arsenals beyond 2021 and to negotiate a successor treaty.
