Green Party NI leader Clare Bailey MLA:
“The Westminster election result will cause concern for people right across Northern Ireland. Boris Johnson will continue to push through his Brexit deal, despite the complete absence of local political support coupled with the concerns of our farming and agri-food industry, our manufacturing sector and small businesses.
“I fear for what lies ahead for families and people on low incomes under this Tory government. Ten years of austerity has hit people hard. Despite pledges on the ending of austerity, the damage has been done and lives and communities have been forever altered.
“I won’t trust a Prime Minster with previous for lying on financial commitments to the NHS. The funding increases for frontline public services detailed in the Conservative manifesto will only plug some of the gaping holes left by a decade of austerity, even if they come to pass.
“Transformation of our society is needed including an alternative to the obsession with economic growth, private wealth and fossil fuel driven over consumption. “Here in Northern Ireland, political parties must get a deal to restore Stormont across the line before the middle of January. If they fail once again, devolution may come to an end. The Stormont institutions that we all support could go to the wall at a time when our health and education systems need politicians to step up to the mark. “People have run out of patience as the politicians played for time and courted influence away from Stormont. It’s time for these parties to strike a deal for a sustainable form of devolved government.” ENDS
