Firefighters have responded to a house fire in Victoria Street, following a number of Triple Zero (000) calls reporting black smoke just after 6pm.
MFB crews arrived on scene within five minutes to find the Footscray house fully involved in the blaze.
More than 30 firefighters wearing breathing apparatus set up hose lines and commenced an external and internal attack on the fire.
Crews had difficulty accessing the building due to a high fence surrounding the property, but managed to contain the blaze.
The fire was declared under control within 35 minutes of firefighters arriving on scene.
The exact cause of the fire is not yet known.
Victoria Police and Ambulance Victoria crews have been assisting at the scene.
The public is advised to avoid the area where possible while emergency crews respond.
