Engineering troops are one of the oldest in the Armed Forces of the Russian Federation – January 31 is the 319th anniversary of their formation.
This memorable date was established by the Decree of the President of the Russian Federation of September 18, 1996 for the contribution of military engineers to the development of the country’s defense potential and historical traditions. By order of the Minister of Defense of Russia of September 23, 1996, it is prescribed annually on January 21 to celebrate Engineering Troops Day.
The history of the engineering troops dates back to the era of the emergence of the regular Russian army and the signing by Peter I of decrees of 1701 dated January 21 on the establishment of an engineering school and May 25 on the formation of the first engineering units, which were originally represented by the miner company, engineering and pontoon teams.
Currently, the engineering troops of the Armed Forces consist of military command and control bodies, formations, military units and units of engineering troops of the types, branches of the armed forces and troops not included in the types and types of troops of the Armed Forces. They are designed to perform the most complex tasks of engineering support, requiring special training of personnel, the use of engineering equipment, engineering ammunition and engineering property.
The troops are receiving modern models of new weapons, military and special equipment. In 2019, under the state defense order, more than 133 thousand sets of engineering property, 17 dynamic simulators, and over 500 units of engineering equipment were delivered to the troops. These are TMT-K mine trawls, hovercraft reconnaissance boats, BUM-2 drilling and percussion machines, military mobile sawmill complexes, quick deployment kits for temporary high-speed rocket engines, modern pontoon park PP-2005M, and SKO-10 complex water treatment plants, power plants, mobile repair complexes, BMK-MO towing and motor boats, military single-bucket excavators, military cranes with various lifting capacities, etc.
Among the 14 promising engineering weapons adopted for the supply of the Armed Forces of the Russian Federation in 2019, new BMK-MT and BMK-MO towing boats designed for motorization of pontoon parks, sets of radar simulators for a moving column of military and special equipment, a BUM drilling and percussion machine -2, the latest mine detectors – IMP-3, deep MG-1I and combined PPO-2I.
In 2020, under the state defense order, it is planned to supply more than 600 units of engineering equipment.
Every year, on the sidelines of the International Military Technical Forum “Army”, military engineers demonstrate the latest and most promising examples of military engineering equipment, search and disposal devices: explosive items, sets of group and individual equipment of sappers, as well as other means used by engineer troops in performing special tasks
In peacetime, engineering troops carry out a number of important socially significant tasks: they clear the area of explosive objects, participate in the aftermath of industrial accidents and disasters, natural disasters, prevent the destruction of bridges and hydraulic structures during ice drifts, etc. From July 5 to July 27, 2019 a group of troops, which included units of the engineering forces of the Armed Forces of the Russian Federation, carried out work in the city of Tulun and settlements of the Tulun region
In order to assist the Lao side in clearing the territory of the Lao People’s Democratic Republic from October 2019 to March 2020, military personnel of the International Mine Action Center of the Armed Forces of the Russian Federation were sent to this country. Mine clearance is carried out near the famous Valley of pitchers, included in the UNESCO World Heritage List.
