The Republic of France has issued the following statement:

Global health is one of France’s leading development priorities. France’s commitment can be seen through its work within the Global Fund to Fight AIDS, Tuberculosis and Malaria, Unitaid and Gavi, the Vaccine Alliance, which in 2020 celebrates its 20th year.

France has been a member of Gavi since 2004 and is one of its main members and donors. France welcomes Gavi’s extremely positive results in terms of global health and reiterates its full support for it.

Thanks to Gavi, over 760 million children have been vaccinated since its creation in 2000, helping to save almost 13 million lives. Vaccination is one of the most effective forms of healthcare and helps save between 2 and 3 million lives each year worldwide. It is also good for school results and productivity: each dollar invested in vaccinations brings a return on investment of $16 for the health system and $44 for society, with the economic benefits of diseases prevented. In recent years, Gavi has also contributed to increased investment to strengthen health systems and to equip countries in the event of epidemics.

Despite these results, we must always remember that too many children in the world are still dying from diseases which can be cured through vaccinations. Gavi must therefore continue its work more than ever in the years ahead with renewed ambitions and special emphasis on children who have never been vaccinated.
