The visitors will be told when and who began planning the construction of subway and how the architecture of metro depend on the political system.
In The Museum of architecture Shchusev hosting a series of 12 lectures on “the Architecture of the Moscow metro: history and modernity in a global context”. The project is timed to the upcoming 85th anniversary of the Moscow subway. The first metro line was launched on 15 may 1935.
Lectures will go once a week from 28 January to 14 April. Visitors will learn about the phenomenon of the Moscow metro and on the culture of underground transport in the world. Lecturers will not only tell the history of the emergence of this form of public transport in the USSR, but also will analyze the modern architecture of the subway, will give forecasts for the future.
Visitors will get acquainted with the term “rapid transit for urban transport” and learn about the first projects in this field in different countries. For example, not everyone knows about the fact that the first idea of establishing such a form of public transport in Moscow refer to the end of the XIX century. However, these plans were destined to remain on paper. Experts will consider the traditions of off-street transport projects of the first metro stations of the Soviet Union.
A series of lectures will also cover changes in the architecture of the Moscow metro in Soviet times. Changing political situations in the country every time I set new trends in design of subway. A variety of the first 13 metro stations, for example, will be considered as the beginning of the appeal to the classical heritage of the Soviet architecture. The lecturers will pay attention to the decoration of the Palace underground in the Stalin era, the unification of architecture in the period of the thaw, as well as talk about a “third way” in the design in 1960-1980-ies. And finally, the lectures will describe the controversial architectural decisions of the post-Soviet era at the turn of the century.
Listeners can also learn about the architecture of the metro in other cities of Russia. 20 years after the opening of the metro in the capital a very different view of the subway building at Leningrad. Then off-street urban transport is projected in the cities of the Union republics, and only in the 1980s — early 1990s metro appears in Gorky (now — Nizhny Novgorod), Novosibirsk, Kuibyshev (now — Samara) and Sverdlovsk (now — Ekaterinburg).
The last lecture cycle will be devoted to the image of metro in foreign countries and modern architecture of Moscow subway. Attendees will learn about the engineers who create projects now, and on the implementation of new styles in the metro design.
The lecturers will be made by the authors of the educational project “once again about the underground” — a local historian, architectural historian, expert on the history of public transport Moscow Dmitry Goncharuk and candidate of historical Sciences specialist in the metro architecture Alexander Zmeul.
