A man has been arrested following an alleged burglary in Brunswick this morning.

Officers were called to a café on Pearson Street about 2.30am after reports of a break-in.

On arrival police noticed a balaclava clad man carrying a hammer inside the premises.

He ran from officers but a quick response and search by local members, Canine and Critical incident Response Team members resulted in a 43-year-old Brunswick West man being arrested in a nearby backyard.

The man was taken to a local police station and is currently assisting police with their enquires.
