The Commander of the Northern Fleet, Hero of Russia, Vice-Admiral Alexander Moiseev, held a meeting on the situation with the memorial “To Heroes-Submariners during the Great Patriotic War of 1941-1945.” near the village of Liinakhamari, Murmansk region. The monument was barbarously destroyed on 14 September. On this fact, law enforcement agencies opened a criminal case.
As a submarine officer who served on nuclear submarines most of his life, the fleet commander expressed his indignation at the actions of the vandals who defiled the memory of the heroes of the North Sea. It is especially regrettable that an act of vandalism became possible in the year of the 75th anniversary of the Great Victory of the Soviet people over Hitler’s fascism.
“Deliberate abuse of the military memorial is a gross display of disrespect for the history of our country and an attempt to undermine the authority of our state,” Vice Admiral Alexander Moiseev emphasized, “I hope that all those responsible for the destruction of the monument will be identified and will be punished! At the same time, those individuals who groundlessly declare the inaction of state authorities and local self-government bodies in matters of protecting monuments and memorials deserve condemnation.
In July 2020, the historical search expedition of the Northern Fleet and the Russian Geographical Society, which conducted research in the area of the port of Liinakhamari, restored and refined several monuments to the defenders of the Soviet Arctic during the Great Patriotic War. The commander of the fleet expressed confidence that the soldiers of the North Sea will take part in the restoration of the memorial to the heroes-submariners.
The fleet command will decide on the restoration of the monument in cooperation with the Government of the Murmansk region and the leadership of the Pechenga region.
