On this global day of action, it’s time for the other parties to get real on climate before it’s too late. Time to go green Lorna Slater

The Scottish Greens have warned other parties they are ignoring the climate breakdown, as pupils strike today in an urgent call for action.

There is global strike action today by the Fridays for Future movement, led by Greta Thunberg, including distanced events in Glasgow, Edinburgh, Inverness, Aberdeen, Fort William and Dumfries and Galloway.

Commenting, Scottish Greens co-leader Lorna Slater said: “The young people striking today recognise that the climate breakdown we are witnessing presents an existential threat to our survival. Wildfires, droughts, melting ice caps and landslips are a part of our daily news cycle yet we have politicians still looking for answers in technology that hasn’t been developed yet, such as electric planes or carbon capture and storage.

“With Labour opening new coal mines, the Liberal Democrats opposing local moves to get more people cycling and walking, the Conservatives trying to add lanes to our motorways and the SNP still cosying up to the oil and gas industry, their environmental concerns must either be cognitive dissonance or crocodile tears.

“On this global day of action, it’s time for the other parties to get real on climate before it’s too late. Time to go green.”
