Each year, Sustainability Victoria holds Detox Your Home events across the state, which provide a safe, free service to dispose of unwanted toxic chemicals.

Due to COVID-19, some things have changed this year, including mandatory registrations and limited locations. The events are also drive-through and contactless, supported by a COVIDsafe plan.

If you need to dispose of toxic household chemicals such as solvents, poisons and cleaning products, the closest event to Bass Coast residents will be held in Morwell on Sunday, 8 November.

Household chemicals can be dangerous – they can harm your family and your pets, add extra fuel to a house fire, release toxic fumes and pollute the environment for future generations.

Toxic chemicals cannot be disposed of in your kerbside bins and are not accepted at Bass Coast’s waste facilities. The Detox Your Home program recovers and diverts these toxic chemicals from landfill.

Detox Your Home is a service for households only. Chemicals used for farm, commercial or industrial processes are not accepted.

There is no limit on the volume of materials that can be dropped-off, however the maximum acceptable weight or size of any single container is 20 kilograms or 20 litres. Decanting is not permitted.

Before attending a Detox Your Home event, it is important to check which toxic household chemicals are accepted. For more information or to register for your closest event, visit www.sustainability.vic.gov.au/Detox-your-home.
