The New Year united all citizens of the Soviet Union, at all times. It was the same during the Great Patriotic War. Everyone in their place stopped and mentally returned to peacetime, to family, relatives, friends. The holiday was celebrated at the front, in the rear, in evacuation, in the occupied lands.
The main source of daily news at that time was the print media, primarily newspapers. By June 1941, about 9 thousand newspapers and about 1,800 magazines were published in the USSR – every day more than 38 million copies of various printed editions were issued from printing houses, from thick literary almanacs and central newspapers to regional and factory leaflets.
On their pages, first of all, were printed summaries of the Sovinformburo, party legal documents, decrees of the Presidium of the Supreme Soviet on awards and, most importantly, essays on the situation at the front. New Year’s editions, in addition to reports and congratulations, contained a short summary of the outgoing year.
Thus, the newspaper “Pravda” on January 1, 1942 congratulates the inhabitants of the country with optimism and faith in a speedy victory: the sacred struggle for the life, honor and freedom of our great fatherland. The new year starts with good prospects. It should become – and it really will become – the year of the complete defeat of Nazi Germany. “
New Year’s editions of 1943 begin with summing up the results of the 6-week offensive of the Red Army at Stalingrad. You can feel the mood of those years – if in 1942 the inhabitants of the country met the New Year with optimism and hope, then 1943 with confidence in Victory. Yes, 1942 was the most difficult year of the war, but by mid-September 1942, the German fascist troops were stopped at Stalingrad. What all publications wrote about.
New year 1944 is nicknamed in all newspapers the successor of the past 1943, which did everything to make 1944 the decisive year of the war. No one doubted that 1945 would be a historic year. Everyone was waiting for the victorious end of the war.
The newspapers in the 1945 New Year edition paid more attention to the reconstruction work in the country. In this New Year, the results were summed up not only of the last year, but of the entire war. They recalled the capture of Berlin in 1760. “The Motherland and Stalin show us the goal in the Great Patriotic War: to hoist the banner of victory over Berlin.” (newspaper “Pravda” January 1, 1945). Exactly 4 months later, the red banner was hoisted over the Reichstag …
New Year is a holiday of results, hopes, memories. We are continuing this tradition.
