The mosaic panel “Pioneer Icon” on the territory of the Palace of Pioneers on Vorobyovy Gory has been restored. The specialists have completed the restoration of the pattern laid out from smalt parts. They removed chips, made up for the lost parts of the composition, and also reinforced the existing structures of the retaining walls of the panels and stairs and made waterproofing for them. In addition, the granite stairs of the monument were put in order and the metal fences on the upper level of the panel were recreated.
The panel “Pioneer Icon” adorns the slope of the decorative pool of the identified cultural heritage site “Palace of Pioneers and Schoolchildren named after the 40th Anniversary of the All-Union Pioneer Organization”, also known as the Palace of Pioneers on Vorobyovy Gory. It is located at Kosygin Street, 17.
“The restoration of the mosaic panel and the staircase leading to it began in 2017. The object was in an unsatisfactory condition – it was required not only to clear the remaining parts of the mosaic, but also to restore the lost ones. In addition, the panel structures needed strengthening. This process was approached with special care and attention. Especially painstakingly, the smalt colors were selected for the restoration of the mosaic. The process was complicated, as the panel includes three shades of blue and red, ”said the head of the mosaic.
At the first stage of the mosaic reconstruction, a layer of the old mortar was removed, on which the scarlet smalt of a fragment of the panel called “Flame” was attached. In addition, the restorers made a reinforced mortar screed imitating blue smalt on the “Lenta” fragment. Then smalt was laid in different planes, repeating the original technique of laying in mosaics of the entire complex of the Palace of Pioneers. The cladding of limestone slabs for the Zvezda part was restored using archive photos from 1984. As a result, about 25 percent of the historical smalt and 60 percent of the original granite slabs were preserved. Now the panel is completely finished.
The Moscow Palace of Pioneers moved to a building on Kosygin Street in 1962. Such famous prose writers and poets as Arkady Gaidar, Lev Kassil, Samuil Marshak, Agnia Barto, Korney Chukovsky often came to the children.
Today, the Palace of Pioneers on Vorobyovy Gory continues to function as an institution of additional education. There are various clubs and sections for children and teenagers.
