Moscow employs 30 percent of Russia’s scientific personnel.

Prizes are annually awarded for the achievement of outstanding results in fundamental and applied scientific research in the field of natural, technical, medical and humanitarian sciences, for the development and implementation of new technologies, techniques, devices, equipment, materials and substances that contribute to improving the efficiency of activities in the real sector of the economy and the social sphere of the capital.
Young scientists from Moscow under the age of 35 (doctors of science – up to 40) can apply for the award. We are talking about scientific and scientific-pedagogical workers, post-graduate students, doctoral students, other specialists conducting scientific and scientific-technical activities in organizations of science and higher education located in the city, as well as workers of enterprises and organizations conducting experimental developments.
“In the year of the pandemic, our Moscow scientists were the first to decipher the coronavirus genome, created a whole line of drugs to combat COVID-19, which saved the lives of thousands and thousands of our fellow citizens. Eased their suffering, cured. We have created a whole line of unique vaccines, which are beginning to be used not only in our country, but all over the world, having proven their high efficiency. The stories that Russian science either died or was absolutely uncompetitive – all this was swept aside, it turned out that everything is there. There are inventors, there are opportunities, there are abilities to create and create a world-class product, ”the Moscow Mayor said.
Sergei Sobyanin added that during the coronavirus pandemic, scientific activities were not limited in the capital. Now Moscow is getting out of a difficult situation, in part thanks to scientists.
“To a large extent, without false modesty, we did it better than in many European countries, including thanks to your efforts, the efforts of your colleagues, Russian science, Moscow science, doctors with whom you also work side by side. I sincerely thank you for what you are doing, for those inventions of yours that are pushing our economy, our country forward, despite all the difficulties and problems that you face, ”added the Mayor of Moscow.
Nikolai Nikitin, winner in the Biotechnology nomination, noted that a large-scale information campaign by the Moscow Government also helped to prevent the spread of coronavirus infection.
“The number of broadcasts, interviews in the media and other information materials – all this contributed to the prevention of the spread of coronavirus among the population, thanks to which many people were able to secure their lives and protect not only themselves, but also their relatives. An important role in this process is played by the fact that a large number of young people, authoritative scientists are attracted to read popular lectures on various disciplines of science. The number of awards has also grown – from 33 to 50. But the number of nominations remains unchanged – 22, including 11 nominations in the field of research and the same number in the field of development.
During the competition for the awards in 2013–2020, more than 4.5 thousand applications were submitted. 432 young scientists were awarded.
Including, in 2020, employees of 184 organizations submitted 1,042 applications. 78 young scientists, whose developments and research have already proven themselves in practice, became laureates of the awards.
The work of Mikhail Shugai from the Russian National Research Medical University named after N.I. Pirogova is dedicated to the development of bioinformatic methods for analyzing the antigenic specificity of human T-cell repertoires and their application in the COVID-19 pandemic.
Mikhail Pogorely and Anastasia Minervina from the Institute of Bioorganic Chemistry named after academicians M.M. Shemyakin and Yu.A. Ovchinnikov of the Russian Academy of Sciences conducted a study of the T-cell immune response to viral infections and antiviral vaccines.
The algorithms proposed by Pavel Dvurechensky and Alexander Gasnikov were used in the development of a transport and economic model of freight transportation by Russian Railways, pharmaceuticals by Biocad, a model for ranking web pages (a project together with Yandex).
Clinical efficiency was demonstrated by the Oncobox method of selection of therapy for the treatment of oncological diseases, developed with the leading participation of Maxim Sorokin. The method is currently being used to personalize the treatment of cancer patients in a clinical trial involving more than 230 patients from Moscow, Kaluga, Petrozavodsk and other Russian cities.
Nikolay Nikitin and Yekaterina Yevtushenko have developed a rubella vaccine that has shown complete safety in terms of the studied parameters in animal models.
The results of the developments of Alexander Baburin were introduced into the projects of the Moscow State Technical University named after N.E. Bauman, Moscow State University named after M.V. Lomonosov, the All-Russian Research Institute of Automation named after N.L. Dukhov, Institute of Spectroscopy of the Russian Academy of Sciences, including projects for the development of plasmonic, photonic and superconducting devices for quantum information processing and the development of multiparameter optical sensors for gas means of industrial systems of the State Corporation “Rosatom”.
Another laureate of the award is Konstantin Kogos, the author of 12 computer programs that have successfully passed the state registration procedure and have received appropriate legal protection. The methods and software tools developed by him to counter information leakage through covert channels have been introduced into the activities of ZAO Gollard. The results have also been incorporated into the development work carried out by Information Security.
Using individualized biomimetic cell-engineering constructs developed by Fedor Senatov and Alexei Maksimkin, four successful operations were performed to reconstruct sections of limb bones (from three to 11 centimeters) after resection in the Moscow veterinary clinics Medvet and Biocontrol.
The development of Alexander Komshin, Anton Syritsky and Konstantin Potapov has been introduced or adopted for use at a number of enterprises in the country, including RusHydro (Moscow), Volga-SGEM – Kamspetsenergo (Naberezhnye Chelny), Uralenergo-Soyuz (Yekaterinburg) , Scientific Research Institute of Instrumentation named after V.V. Tikhomirova (Zhukovsky), Ramenskoye Instrument Making Plant (Ramenskoye), Elara (Cheboksary), Central Design Bureau of Mechanical Engineering (St. Petersburg).
On the basis of the development of Yuri Yanovich, a number of blockchain solutions have been designed and implemented. Among them are systems for combating counterfeit products in the plastic pipe market, which have successfully worked in a test mode at the Klimovsk Pipe Plant in 2019–2020.
In 2020, a council of laureates of the Moscow Government Prize for Young Scientists was created. Its main tasks are the popularization of science, the involvement of students in scientific activities, and the improvement of the quality of education.
Council members are actively involved in the implementation of such interesting educational and career guidance projects as “Saturdays of the Moscow Schoolchild”, “Scientific Holidays”, “Scientific Saturdays”, “Circle from Academician”.
Moscow – the center of Russian science
By the decision of Russian President Vladimir Putin, 2021 was declared the Year of Science and Technology in Russia. According to the Mayor of Moscow, science has always been and remains one of the most important areas of development for the capital.
“We will continue to build and develop technology parks, research centers, including the unique project of Moscow State University – the technological valley“ Vorobyovy Gory ”. Moscow has one of the most powerful intellectual and technological potential among the world’s megacities. There are 636 scientific organizations in the capital – 15.6 percent of all organizations carrying out research and development in Russia. These include academic and research institutes, national research universities and other leading universities in the country.
Moscow employs 30 percent of the country’s scientific personnel, including 45 percent of doctors of sciences, 38 percent of candidates of sciences and 33 percent of researchers. In the capital’s universities, 28 percent of students and 30 percent of graduate students in Russia study.
Scientists working in Moscow account for 48 percent of scientific articles published by Russian researchers in 2019 in scientific journals indexed by the Web of Science (approximately 30 thousand out of 62 thousand articles).
In 2019, 26.2 percent of patents for inventions in Russia were granted to Moscow inventors. They submitted 23.1 percent of applications for state registration of the results of intellectual activity and means of individualization.
The Moscow government attaches great importance to the development of science and the stimulation of scientific work. In addition to awarding prizes to young scientists, the Moscow Government, together with the Russian Foundation for Basic Research, allocates grants for fundamental research carried out by young scientists. Annually, 100 million rubles are provided for these purposes – 50 million rubles on each side, which makes it possible to finance 50 projects within two years.
Together with the Ministry of Education and Science of Russia and Moscow State University named after M.V. Lomonosov city annually holds a science festival. The largest scientific holiday of the country covers more than 90 sites of the city – universities, museums, research centers.
23 federal universities are participating in the project of pre-professional education “Academic class in a Moscow school”. More than two thousand students of academic classes, opened in 28 city schools, have the opportunity to immerse themselves in the atmosphere of scientific research and make an informed choice of their future profession.
The largest project in the coming years in the development of science will be the creation of the innovative scientific and technological center of Moscow State University “Vorobyovy Gory”, the construction of which was started by the Moscow Government in 2021 on behalf of the President of Russia V.V. Putin.
But the main tool for stimulating the development of science is the city of Moscow itself, with its almost limitless opportunities for creative work, scientific careers and the implementation of research projects in any field of knowledge.
