On the night of February 10-11, as part of the third stage of the command and staff exercise with the parachute and artillery regiments of the Ivanovo Guards airborne formation, the command of the Kostroma paratrooper regiment decided to go over to the defensive at an important line of the Pesochnoe training ground in the Yaroslavl region.

Despite the harsh weather with low temperatures, the paratroopers, supported by artillery, held back all attempts of conditional illegal armed groups to penetrate deep into the defense. The destruction of the “enemy” on the approaches to the positions was carried out with fire from standard small arms, grenade launchers, artillery and combat vehicles. During the day, the servicemen practiced complex engagement of targets at various distances.

Fire destruction of the “enemy” was carried out at all stages of the defensive battle using a reconnaissance and fire contour in cooperation with artillery.

As the commander of the Guards Kostroma parachute regiment of the guard, Colonel Oleg Shmelev, noted, at the final stage of the exercise, the personnel of the regiment with attached units completed all the assigned tasks. While on the defensive, the units repelled the offensive of conditional illegal armed formations. The regiment fulfilled its task in defense, receiving high marks.

The command post exercise with airborne assault and live fire is conducted under the leadership of the Acting Commander of the Ivanovo Guards Airborne Force of the Guards Colonel Alexander Kornev from 8 to 11 February in the territories of Ivanovo, Kostroma and Yaroslavl regions in order to check the readiness of the military units of the formation for planning combat operations and the practical application of units.

In total, more than 1.5 thousand servicemen were involved in the exercise, about 100 pieces of equipment were involved, including BMD-2K-AU airborne assault vehicles, BTR-D, BTR-ZD airborne armored personnel carriers, 120-mm self-propelled guns “Nona-S” , 122-mm D-30 howitzers, small arms and mortars, and seven Il-76MD military transport aircraft.
