Snow removal is a complex technological process that can be influenced by air temperature, wind direction and rainfall.

Today in the capital is expected heavy snowwhich will go on for several days. Snow drifts and icy conditions are predicted. Thousands of workers and snow removal equipment will take to the streets and roads to maintain order.

“Over the coming weekend, up to 35 centimeters of precipitation will fall in the capital. City services have already been switched to an enhanced mode of operation: snow removal will be carried out around the clock. About 60 thousand road workers, janitors, roofers and 13.5 thousand units of snow removal equipment are involved in the work, ”said Deputy Moscow Mayor Pyotr Biryukov.

Utilities need to perform work quickly and efficiently in any conditions, because each cycle of work is strictly regulated. The snow removal itself is a complex technological process, which is influenced by the air temperature, and the direction of the wind, and the amount of precipitation.

How snow banks should form on the side of roads and in yards, how many days they can lie in the city – in our material.

Why are there snowdrifts along the roads

The main task facing public utilities is to promptly remove snow from the roadway in bad weather. It will allow vehicles to continue moving along the cleared road. Therefore, the snow is immediately swept to the side of the road, forming small snowdrifts, or snow shafts, as the public utilities call them.

Their formation takes 16 hours after the end of the snowfall. The width of the shafts on the roadside must not exceed 1.5 meters. They can be located in trough zones of roads and streets at least five meters from pedestrian crossings and 20 meters from public transport stops. At the same time, snow must not be dumped at intersections of streets, side stones, sidewalks and lawns. In places where shafts are formed, walkways for pedestrians and a passage for motorists must be made.

How long can shafts lie along roads

The city has at its disposal 56 stationary and 38 mobile snow-melting points working around the clock. If the capital is covered with heavy snowfall, they cannot completely melt all the snow that has fallen. Then the utilities begin to take it out in stages on dump trucks.

The first to disappear are drifts from all parking lots, they must be removed after 12 hours. During the day, shafts are taken out from public transport stops, pedestrian crossings, metro stations, from entrances to hospitals and ambulance stations. And only then the utilities begin to remove the rest of the snow banks.

When all the snow has been removed, the place where it lay is cleaned, the formed snow-ice blocks are chopped off and removed.

How long can drifts lie in the trays

Collected snow can be stored in yards for up to four days. The timing depends on the strength and frequency of snowfall. Usually he is taken away after one or two days.

The collected snow is stored in specially designated areas. It is very important to form shafts away from buildings and territories where heating networks pass so that the snowdrifts do not start to melt earlier. It is also forbidden to store snow on rain wells, playgrounds and sports grounds.

The permissible size of snow banks in yards is no more than one meter at the base. Therefore, after cleaning the yard, you should get several neat heaps, which are distributed over the territory so as not to interfere with cars and pedestrians.

Is it possible to throw snow on lawns

In the courtyards, it is allowed to throw snow onto the lawns, but on condition that it has not been treated with deicing materials. Also, wipers should not cover bushes and other vegetation with snow so as not to harm it.

Another important rule is that the snow on the lawn cannot exceed 80 centimeters. Therefore, it is scattered, evenly distributed over the entire surface of the lawn. If so much snow falls out that it exceeds the permissible height, then all the surplus must be removed and disposed of.

How quickly the shafts will be taken out during abnormal snowfalls

The amount of precipitation directly affects the timing of snow removal. So, in order to completely remove 10 centimeters of snow from major roads and streets, three days are allotted, for every five centimeters above this norm, utilities are given an additional day.

For yards, the norm is different. Snow up to five centimeters will be taken out of the local area within five days, but if up to 10 centimeters of snow falls, then in seven days.

But even if there is a lot of snow, the shafts will not leave on the streets and yards. They will be moved to temporary storage sites for snow. Basically, such sites are located in industrial zones, away from residential buildings. Each county has approximately one site.
