The All-Army Chess Championship among cadets, Nakhimov’s, Suvorov’s and female students will be held online for the first time.
During the tournament, pupils, cadets and Suvorovites from all over the country, despite the distances and epidemiological restrictions, will come together in chess battles thanks to modern means of communication. The first games are already taking place today.
“The introduction of a chess course into the educational process of pre-university educational institutions allowed us to widely develop our abilities, to form important qualities such as independence and responsibility for our actions, consistency and perseverance in achieving the set goals, the ability to make competent and correct decisions,” he said at the opening of the championship Colonel-General Viktor Goremykin, head of the Main Personnel Directorate of the Russian Ministry of Defense.
In his opinion, holding competitions in a distance format will not weaken the enthusiasm for the game, and the participants will be able to demonstrate the speed of solving in a limited time.
Also at the opening ceremony, the world rapid chess champion, grandmaster Sergey Karjakin, spoke to the participants of the tournament.
“In my opinion, the course taken by the Ministry of Defense to introduce school students to the game of chess, to introduce the chess course into the curriculum, to include the All-Army Championship in the calendar of special events, turned out to be correct,” the grandmaster said.
The III All-Army Chess Championship, which will be held from February 10 to 12, is held in the form of a team championship with individual results on each board. The match consists of four games between the athletes of the teams.
The winner of the match is determined by the highest total of points scored by the team players in each game. More than 150 students take part in the tournament.
The championship among pupils of schools has been held since 2019. Last year, the winners were the pupils of the Russian Defense Ministry’s Boarding House.
