The crews of the MiG-31 fighter-interceptors and the Su-24 bombers of a separate mixed air regiment from the Air Force and Air Defense Army of the Northern Fleet, during routine combat training, conducted exercises on refueling in the air.

More than 20 crews worked this most difficult element of flight training. They replenished the fuel supplies from the Il-78 tanker aircraft of the Russian Aerospace Forces.

Refueling in the air took place at an altitude of 5 thousand meters at a speed of about 500 kilometers per hour.

Several young pilots took part in the training flights, who first tested this element on Su-24 bombers.

More experienced pilots on the MiG-31 and Su-24 conducted training to restore their skills in piloting combat vehicles when refueling from an air tanker.

Refueling aircraft with fuel in the air increases the range and capabilities of the Northern Fleet’s aviation in the Arctic, and makes it possible to use a permanent deployment location to perform tasks at a great distance.
