The crews of Ka-27 search and rescue and anti-submarine helicopters, as well as Ka-29 assault helicopters from the Air Force and Air Defense Army of the Northern Fleet, performed flights at night over the coast of the Kola Bay.

In total, 12 crews of a separate shipborne helicopter aviation regiment of the Northern Fleet on 6 units of aviation equipment took part in the flights. Their work in the sky was provided by the personnel of the aviation engineering service of the regiment.

During the flight shift, the helicopter pilots practiced piloting, navigation and the skills of passing a given course over an unoriented terrain in conditions of low air temperature.

Practicing these exercises at night is included in the compulsory training program for helicopter pilots of the Northern Fleet, which makes it possible to ensure the use of aviation all year round even in difficult conditions, including the period of the polar night, which lasts up to several months in the Arctic.

Ka-27 is the main helicopter of the naval aviation of the Russian Navy. It is produced in two versions: anti-submarine – Ka-27PL and search and rescue – Ka-27PS.

Ka-27 helicopters are capable of searching and rescuing crews of aircraft, ships and vessels in distress at sea, as well as carrying out transport missions to support the actions of ship groupings.

The anti-submarine version is designed to search, detect, track and destroy enemy submarines.
