This is a general plan for the reconstruction of Moscow, plans for the Moscow Hotel, Stalin’s skyscrapers, VDNKh and the metro.

The “House on Brestskaya” exhibition opens the “Architecture of Changes” exhibition, which presents unique architectural plans of the Soviet period. Among them are plans for the Moscow Hotel, Stalinist skyscrapers, the building of the Labor and Defense Council, where the General Plan was later located, and now the State Duma is in session. This was announced by the head Department of urban planning policy of the city of Moscow Sergey Levkin.

“Visitors to the exhibition will also be able to get acquainted with the general plan for the reconstruction of Moscow in 1935, the plan of the Exhibition of Economic Achievements (VSKhV), schemes for the reconstruction of Gorky Street, the Moscow Canal, the metro in general and the first metro stations separately,” said Sergei Levkin.

The period chosen for the exposition played an important role in transforming the architectural appearance of the city, when the development of Moscow was carried out under the influence of different architectural styles: constructivism, rationalism, art deco and Stalinist Empire style. Visitors will be able to plunge into the atmosphere of the middle of the last century and get acquainted with the architecture of that time.

According to Sergei Levkin, the exhibition presents unique publications on architectural topics from the collection of the scientific and technical library GBU “Mosstroyinform”.

In turn, Yulia Kulikova, director of the Moscow State Budgetary Institution Mosstroyinform, noted that the business program of the exhibition will be held in a hybrid format, including online and offline lectures.

On the opening day, February 17, at 17:00, a lecture “Unrealized projects of Moscow in the 1930-1950s” will be held, which will be read by Denis Romodin, a local historian, researcher of the Museum of Moscow, author of articles on Moscow architecture of the 20th century, one of the developers of the concept of architectural excursions to the cities of Russia, the author and leader of architectural excursions in Moscow. On Thursday, February 18, an online lecture entitled “The Moscow Metro of the 1930-1950s as a Phenomenon of Extreme Environment Architecture” will be held. It will be conducted by Maria Valdes Odriosola, candidate of cultural studies and member of the Union of Artists of Russia.

On Thursday, February 25, Irina Vishnyakova, a local historian and leading guide of the MosPromArt project, will deliver an online lecture “Moscow of the 1920s: a new starting point”. She will also conduct an online lecture “Moscow in the 1930s: from the past to the future” on March 2.

The final event of the business program will be an offline lecture by Maria Kostyuk, candidate of art history, architecture historian and chief curator of the A.V. Shchusev. She will tell about the famous Soviet architect Boris Iofan.

Since 2011 in the capital restored 1,560 cultural heritage sites… At the same time, work on 12 of them was completed at the beginning of 2021. Among the significant objects of restoration this year are the building of GES-2, three pavilions of VDNKh and the house of the architect K. Duvanov.
