Today, servicemen of the combined-arms army of the Western Military District, stationed in the Leningrad Region, took part in the solemn ceremony of giving military honors to the Russians who performed their official duty outside the Fatherland, held in the city of Ivangorod.

During the ceremony under the leadership of Colonel Alexander Rusanov, deputy commander of the formation for military-political work, servicemen and residents of the city laid flowers at the foot of the monument to the soldiers-internationalists, the fireworks team fired a volley of small arms, those present honored the memory of the war heroes with a minute of silence.

“We remember and honor the names of Soviet soldiers who fulfilled their international duty in the Democratic Republic of Afghanistan. I hope that the memory of them will be preserved and multiplied from year to year, inspiring future generations of servicemen to preserve peace in our country and abroad, ”Colonel Alexander Rusanov concluded his speech.

Annually, on February 15, the Russian Federation celebrates the Day of Remembrance of the Russians who performed their official duty outside the Fatherland. On this day, in 1989, the withdrawal of Soviet troops from Afghanistan was completed. In the course of the unfolding armed conflict, which lasted more than 9 years, about 10 thousand soldiers and officers of the Soviet army died, giving their lives for the preservation of peace on Afghan soil.
