Tomorrow, the service of fuel and lubricants of the Russian Armed Forces turns 85 years old. On the eve of this jubilee, brief results of the organization’s activities were summed up in the fuel and lubricants service of the Northern Fleet.

More than 150 thousand tons of various types of fuel are annually allocated to the fleet: diesel fuel, naval fuel oil, motor gasoline and aviation kerosene. The fleet has organized a fuel storage and distribution system, taking into account the climatic features of the Far North and the Arctic.

To ensure combat and operational training of the fleet forces at sea, several sea tankers operate as part of the auxiliary fleet. Every year, the large sea tanker “Sergei Osipov”, medium sea tankers “Kama”, “Vyazma”, “Akademik Pashin” and others perform the tasks of supplying fuel to the ships and vessels of the fleet in the far ocean zone. During the northern delivery, more than 20 thousand tons of fuel were delivered to the facilities of the Northern Fleet located on the islands of the Arctic Ocean and the continental coast of the Arctic seas. These are mainly diesel fuel and aviation kerosene.

New technologies are used to refuel automobiles and armored vehicles in permafrost conditions. Thus, in the military garrison of Tiksi (Republic of Yakutia) on the coast of the Laptev Sea, new container filling stations were installed, which do not require deepening of the tanks. They are able to work independently from their own energy source or from industrial power grids.

The most important area of activity of the fuel and lubricants service is to provide for the forces of the Northern Fleet in the Arctic, where natural conditions impose special requirements on the quality and composition of the fuel used by military equipment. Arctic diesel fuel has been specially developed for this, which is successfully used at low air temperatures. They are provided with tactical groups of the fleet deployed on the islands of Alexandra Land and Kotelny, as well as military formations of the Air Force and Air Defense Army serving in Yakutia and on Novaya Zemlya.
