In the Leningrad, Tver, Nizhny Novgorod, Pskov, Voronezh regions and the Republic of Karelia, joint combat training was held in aviation, anti-aircraft missile and radio engineering units of the Leningrad Army of the Air Force and Air Defense (Air Force and Air Defense) of the Western Military District (ZVO).

According to the plan of the training, the combat crews of the radar stations and anti-aircraft missile systems of the air defense units were supposed to deter the attempts of fighter aircraft to get into the given airspace and to inflict missile and bomb attacks on the most significant ground targets. The air groups of the operational-tactical and army aviation of the formation played the role of a mock enemy.

The main task of the subunits of the radio engineering forces was the early detection of air targets approaching from different directions and at different altitudes, as well as the transmission of the coordinates of the trajectory of aircraft movement for anti-aircraft missile divisions.

During joint combat training events, each of the fighters worked out the elements of evading air defense facilities, maneuvering and flying at extremely low altitudes. At the same time, the calculations of anti-aircraft missile systems have worked out the destruction of air targets with the help of electronic launches of anti-aircraft guided missiles.

More than 500 servicemen took part in the joint training event, over 200 units of aviation, radio-technical and anti-aircraft missile equipment of the association were involved.
