The bird did not fly away to winter in warm regions, but safely spent the cold months on the territory of the Kuzminki-Lyublino park.

A water shepherd was spotted in the Kuzminki-Lyublino Natural and Historical Park. Specialists Mosprirodyfound that the bird had spent the winter in the capital without flying to warmer regions. It has not yet been possible to determine whether a male or a female lives in a Moscow park – representatives of this species have the same color.

In the capital, water shepherds are extremely rare, mainly during the period of migration. They remain for the winter only if they find the habitat conditions suitable.

The water shepherd is a representative of the crane-like order. The bird is distinguished by a long beak and a funny gait: when walking, it lifts its paws high. The shepherd boy has a special voice, he emits a characteristic cry and short whistles.

The bird lives near water bodies, feeding on insects and invertebrates, and in the cold season, aquatic plants are included in its diet. Shepherdesses live alone, but during nesting they converge and keep monogamous pairs throughout the season. On the territory of Russia, the breeding season for these birds begins when the snow and ice completely melt. They settle on last year’s reed stalks or marshy bumps, carefully masking their nest, inside which an inconspicuous hole usually leads. During nesting, birds defend their territory and aggressively drive away strangers, demonstrating threatening postures.

The bird is nocturnal and prefers not to be in open areas.
