The Moscow cadet corps “Boarding school for pupils of the Ministry of Defense of the Russian Federation” summed up the results of the II International Olympiad among pupils of pre-university educational institutions of the CIS member states in geography.

This year the topic of the Olympiad was “Discoveries of Military Geographers”. The chosen topic allowed not only to enrich the pupils’ knowledge of geography, but also allowed the participants of the competition to learn about the life path and heroic deeds of military geographers.

The Olympiad was held remotely online due to current restrictions.

Colonel-General Viktor Goremykin, Head of the Main Personnel Directorate of the Russian Defense Ministry, addressed the participants with a welcoming speech.

“Participation in a competition of this level is, of course, an achievement and a victory,” noted Viktor Goremykin.

He added that it was no coincidence that the purpose of the II International Olympiad was not so much the degree of the educational level as the understanding of general geographic processes and patterns.

“Of course, no maps, no navigators, no compasses – only knowledge, perseverance and perseverance will help you achieve your goals. Now all paths are open in front of you, and I would like your paths to be connected with geography, ”the head of the Main Personnel Directorate of the Russian Ministry of Defense addressed the participants.

This year, pre-university educational institutions of the military departments of Belarus and Uzbekistan took part in the Olympiad.

Competition tasks developed by specialists from Moscow State University with the participation of the Russian Geographical Society corresponded to the level of all-Russian and international Olympiads for schoolchildren. For the first time, part of the tasks was compiled in the form of case studies – problem situations involving work with topographic information and climate diagrams.

Also, pupils, Suvorovites, Nakhimovites and cadets demonstrated their knowledge in the field of geographical objects, landscape, territories, countries, continents and oceans. During the competitive tests, the participants drew up plans of the area, route schemes and worked with contour maps. The test part of the assignments was aimed at identifying knowledge of the basic concepts, terms, definitions studied in geography lessons.

Within the framework of the all-army stage of the Olympiad, the results were summed up both in the individual championship among students of the 8th and 10th grades, and in the team competition in the same categories.

Three teams took part in the international stage of the Olympiad: from the Russian Federation, the team of the Moscow cadet corps “Boarding school for pupils of the Russian Ministry of Defense, who won the All-Amey stage, the Republic of Belarus – the team of the Minsk Suvorov School, the Republic of Uzbekistan – the team of the Temurbeklar Maktabi military-academic lyceum”.
