There will be more greenery on the island: trees and shrubs will be planted, lawns and flower beds will be laid out.
As part of a long-term program, all the embankments of the left bank of the Moskva River, from Moscow City to the Tagansky District, and also the right bank, from Gorky Park to the Kremlin, were put in order in the capital. Last year, work was to begin on the embankments of the Balchug Island. However, for obvious reasons, they had to be postponed.
“In the spring and summer of this year, Sofiyskaya, Raushskaya, Sadovnicheskaya and Kosmodamianskaya embankments and the adjacent Sadovnicheskaya Street, Komissariatsky, Faleevsky, 1st and 2nd Raushsky lanes and Repinsky square will get a new look. The need for improvement in Balchug is simply striking. Although it is a stone’s throw from the Kremlin and Zaryadye, the streets here look sad and dismal. There is little greenery, and the narrow and broken sidewalks in places scare off pedestrians. Everyone is uncomfortable: local residents, hotel guests, office workers and music lovers who come to concerts at the House of Music, ”wrote in
your blog Sergei Sobyanin.
The main idea of the improvement of Balchug is in the conditional division of urban space into historical and modern.
“The sidewalks inside the island – on Sadovnicheskaya Street, in lanes and along buildings on the embankments – are mostly used by local residents and office workers. The movement along them is calm and unhurried. It must remain so in the future. You just need to put these sidewalks in order and add recreation areas with classic Moscow benches. And vice versa, tourists walk along the embankments by the water, and the townspeople ride scooters and bicycles. The city space there could look brighter and more modern, ”explained Sergei Sobyanin.
It is planned that in front of the House of Music there will be original benches framed by a lattice made of metal pipes. This design is reminiscent of a brass band and at the same time echoes the theme of the river. Some of the lanterns on Balchug Island will be made in a modern minimalist style. Others will resemble vintage gas lanterns. The parapets of the embankments will be decorated with special lighting.
There will be more greenery on the island. Lawns and flower beds will be planted here, trees and shrubs will be planted: lindens, maples, elms, ornamental apple trees, fieldfare, cotoneaster and white turf. They will protect pedestrians from road dust.
The squares on the Kosmodamianskaya and Sadovnicheskaya embankments will be landscaped. Also, work will take place in the park on Bolotnaya Square (Repinsky Square), created for the 800th anniversary of Moscow in 1948. The existing trees will be preserved as much as possible and new green spaces will be planted here. Lanterns, benches and urns will be made in the style of the late 40s of the last century.
The part of Balchug Island between the monument to Peter I and Serafimovich Street is not formally included in this landscaping project. But only because work on the restoration of HPP-2 is being completed there. A new pedestrian zone will be created next to the historic building, linking the Cathedral of Christ the Savior with Yakimanka. From the Patriarshy Bridge, you can go down to Bolotnaya Embankment and sit right by the water.
“Improvement of Balchug Island will become the largest project for creating a high-quality urban space in the center of Moscow, which we are implementing this year,” concluded Sergei Sobyanin.
