We are concerned about the expansion of the terrorist threat in the Sahara-Sahel region as a result of the growing activity of numerous Islamist groups affiliated with ISIS and Al-Qaeda.

On 15 March, a terrorist attack on a Malian military convoy in the Gao region killed more than 30 and injured 14 soldiers. The return fire of the Malian army with the support of the French contingent participating in Operation Barkhan, most of the militants were destroyed.

On the same day, in Niger, in the Tillaberi region near the Malian border, Islamists, presumably from the “Islamic State in the Great Sahara,” fired at civilian vehicles. 58 people became victims of the terrorist attack. The country has declared three days of mourning.

Moscow resolutely condemns the next barbaric crimes of terrorist forces against military personnel and civilians in our friendly Mali and Niger. We express our condolences and sympathy to the families and friends of the victims, and we wish the victims of these tragedies a speedy recovery.

Russia will continue to invariably support collective efforts aimed at combating terrorism in the Sahara-Sahel zone, provide the necessary assistance to the states of the region in improving the combat capability of the armed forces, training military personnel and law enforcement officials.
