At the Plesetsk cosmodrome in the Arkhangelsk region, commemorative events were held dedicated to the Day of Remembrance of 48 servicemen – testers of rocket and space technology who died as a result of the disaster on March 18, 1980 at one of the launch complexes of the cosmodrome in preparation for the launch of the Vostok-2M launch vehicle.

At the memorial complex “Eternal Flame” in Mirny, a mourning rally was held, during which the head of the cosmodrome, Colonel Nikolai Bashlyaev, addressed the relatives of the victims with words of grief and condolences.

During commemorative events at the city memorial complex “Eternal Flame” and at the monument to the fallen servicemen at the site of the tragedy at the launch site No. 4 of site No. 43, representatives of the command and servicemen of the military units of the cosmodrome, veterans, eyewitnesses of the tragedy, comrades of the dead servicemen, representatives of the local clergy , the youth of the city schools laid flowers and honored with a minute of silence the memory of the soldiers who gave their lives to the conquest of space.

During a minute of silence, as a sign of memory and sorrow, under the measured beat of the metronome, schoolchildren of the city of Mirny released 48 white balls into the sky – so many servicemen died in that terrible tragedy.
