The command of the Military Academy of the General Staff of the Armed Forces of the Russian Federation congratulated the famous scientist, veteran of the Center for Military Strategic Studies, retired Aviation Lieutenant General Vasily Makarov on the 95th birthday.
Vasily Ivanovich Makarov began his military career before the Great Patriotic War with an application for admission to the Voronezh Special School of the Air Force. After June 22, 1941, he fought enemy saboteurs in the ranks of a fighter battalion.
Vasily managed to realize his dream of military aviation only in 1943 – he became a cadet at the Irkutsk Military Aviation School, received an aviation mechanic diploma and a sergeant’s shoulder straps. Then the 18th Aviation Regiment in Ukraine. Finally, the long-awaited study at the 1st Chkalovsk military aviation school for pilots.
Upon graduation, Makarov serves as an instructor pilot and flight commander. Then the academy and service in the Far Eastern Military District. From the officer of the operational department of the headquarters of the 54th Air Army, Vasily Ivanovich passes the way to the deputy chief of staff of the 303st Fighter Aviation Division. From this position, Makarov entered the Military Academy of the General Staff, a forge of senior command personnel.
Vasily Ivanovich continued his service in the Belarusian Military District as chief of the operations department of the 26th Air Army and chief of staff – first deputy commander of the army.
Great practical experience, the ability to work with people and the breadth of thinking became the basis for the appointment of Vasily Ivanovich to the Main Operations Directorate of the General Staff of the USSR Armed Forces. In GOU Makarov performed important tasks in the positions of deputy head of the air defense and aviation department, first deputy, and then head of the aviation department.
From 1982 to 1989, Vasily Ivanovich, as a member of the USSR Commission for the International Civil Aviation Organization at the UN (ICAO), successfully defended the foreign policy interests of our state abroad.
From 1989 to 1991 he held the high position of a consultant to the Supreme Soviet of the USSR on defense and security issues, and from January 1992 – chief specialist, leading and senior researcher at the Center for Military Strategic Studies.
Today Vasily Ivanovich Makarov is still engaged in scientific work and shares his experience with young colleagues. He personally and in the composition of the authors’ teams has developed about two hundred scientific, educational, methodological and research works. In a three-volume edition of his memoirs, Vasily Ivanovich outlined the main milestones in the development of the Armed Forces of the USSR and modern Russia, determined the main directions of the development of domestic military theory.
On the day of the 95th anniversary, the command of the General Staff Academy, the leadership of the Center for Military Strategic Studies and the trade union organization wished the veteran good health, inexhaustible energy and success in scientific work.
