This will help prevent possible flooding of the pier and the underground pedestrian tunnel.

A barrier made of water-filled booms will be installed at the Zaryadye Park on Moskvoretskaya embankment during the spring flood, the Deputy Mayor of Moscow for Housing and Utilities and Improvement said Peter Biryukov.

“These structures have been used in the capital for many years and allow, with a sharp rise in the water level, to prevent possible flooding of the pier and the nearby underground pedestrian tunnel,” he explained.

Water-filled booms are separate elastic tanks in the form of a closed sleeve, the outer shell of which is made of ultra-strong polymer fabric. They are inflated with air and then filled with water to make the structure heavier. The booms are tightly fastened to each other with belts and are stacked end-to-end along the entire length of the front part of the berth in one or several rows. On the sides, the berth is covered with sandbags.

12 booms were made especially for the pier near the Zaryadye park. Each is 30 meters long and one meter in diameter.

Workers will install the barrier in no more than 12 hours. They will start work only after they receive a forecast about the time of the spring flood.

In addition, the flood situation is studied and monitored by the helicopter crews of the Moscow Aviation Center. Upon detection of flooding threats, pilots will immediately report information to the console operational services.
