Artillery crews of modern artillery mounts “Msta-S” of the motorized rifle unit of the Eastern Military District (VVO), stationed in the Jewish Autonomous Region, worked out direct fire at small targets. This is the first time artillerymen have practiced shooting at such targets.
The calculations were faced with the task of destroying the manpower of the conditional enemy, who had taken refuge in the building. “Sniper” firing from artillery installations consists in firing a direct fire at a target imitating the loophole of a bunker less than one square meter in size with an “enemy” firepower. The shooting was carried out at a distance of up to 2000 meters.
When practicing such actions, the howitzer crews required the highest level of combat training, since the task was complicated not only by the distance to the target, but also by ballistic and weather features that affect the accuracy of the shot. The aiming of the gun was carried out using modern sighting devices and computers. According to the results of the shooting, the target was destroyed by two shots. When it hit the bunker window, the projectile inflicted maximum damage to manpower and brought out the imaginary enemy’s firepower.
The shooting was carried out during the field exit of the artillery units of the combined-arms formation, in which more than 2 thousand servicemen take part and about 500 pieces of equipment were involved at several ranges of the Amur region.
The 2S19 Msta-S self-propelled howitzer entered service with the formation several years ago. It is designed to destroy enemy defensive structures, command posts, armored targets, manpower and fire weapons. The maximum range of shots exceeds 24 km.
