The Mayor of Athens Konstantinos Bakoyannis presented the Prime Minister of Russia with the Gold Medal of Honor of the city of Athens “For a special contribution to the acquisition of independence by Greece and the relationship of friendship and cooperation between Greece and Russia.”
Mikhail Mishustin’s speech at the award ceremony:
Dear Mr. Bakoyannis! Ladies and gentlemen!
I would like to thank you for the presentation of the Gold Medal of Honor of the city of Athens. This is a special honor. I say without any exaggeration.
Russia understands and appreciates the contribution of Greece to the global treasury of civilization. And of course, your country has had a huge impact on our history. This is a special aesthetics in architecture, painting, poetry, philosophy. Greek scientists founded the first higher educational institution in Moscow – the Slavic-Greek-Latin Academy.
And Russia, in turn, supported the people of Greece in the liberation struggle. His courage inspired our poets. You said about Alexander Pushkin – he called the beginning of the Greek revolution wonderful moments of hope and freedom.
The largest political and economic figures of independent Greece emerged from among the Russian Greeks. In particular, its first ruler, Ioann Kapodistrias, who was previously the head of affairs of the Ministry of Foreign Affairs of the Russian Empire. All this confirms that we are united by deep historical and spiritual ties that go back centuries.
Greece is an important partner today for our country in Europe. The commonality of views on fundamental values, traditions of friendship and mutual understanding provide very good opportunities for cooperation in various areas. I call on our Greek colleagues to build up a multifaceted dialogue, to develop contacts between our capitals – Athens and Moscow. I am sure that the exchange of experience will be very useful and of mutual interest.
Dear friends, I would like to once again express my gratitude for this symbolic gesture. I really appreciate your trust and I wish you success in your work for the benefit of the Greek capital and its inhabitants, and good and prosperity to your wonderful country.
Thank you for the warm welcome of the Russian delegation. Thank.
