The restoration of the Variety Theater will contribute to the creation of a high-quality urban environment on Balchug Island.
Restoration and renovation of the Moscow State Variety Theater continues in Moscow. It will be completely put in order and will open in 2022.
“This is a unique place, but, of course, morally and physically outdated and in need of serious renovation. It is clear that it is difficult, it is clear that it is difficult. We have gone through this story more than once, but it’s worth it. And I think that next year the theater, in fact, will receive a new building and a new life for many, many years, ”noted Sergei Sobyanin while visiting the theater building.
The Mayor of Moscow also congratulated all workers on the World Theater Day, which is celebrated on March 27.
“I would like to say the words of gratitude. During the pandemic, online theaters did not stop working, they did not stop rehearsing. And as soon as it became possible, the doors opened, they let Muscovites and guests of the capital into their theater walls, halls. Today they work almost fully. Of course, this is a certain risk, courage. Nevertheless, the love for the theater is strongest. Thank you so much, ”Sergei Sobyanin said.
Artistic Director of the Moscow Variety Theater Gennady Khazanov thanked the Moscow Government for its active participation in the restoration of the cultural site.
“To be honest, it was difficult to imagine that we would receive such assistance. But now everything has become a reality, and now all that remains is to finish it on time, ”said Gennady Khazanov.
According to the Mayor of Moscow, over the past 10 years, 70 theater buildings have been repaired in the capital.
“Moreover, many of them have radically changed their appearance, appearance, content, new technological equipment has appeared. Everything is comfortable, beautiful, high quality. Theaters “Helikon-Opera”, “Sovremennik”, Theater “School of Modern Play”, which after the fire, it would seem, could not be restored, dozens of others … And we continue this program. I hope that everything will be great in your theater, ”Sergei Sobyanin said.
Since 2011, the share of theater buildings requiring renovation has halved. In the coming years, this number will decrease by another half.
For 60 years of the existence of the Variety Theater in this building, it has never been repaired. The decision on the need for a comprehensive restoration was made by the Mayor of Moscow in 2017. The work began in 2020 and will last until early 2022.
Specialists will restore the bearing capacity of structures, restore the facades of the building, recreate door and window openings.
In the premises of the theater, the old systems of water supply, sewerage, heat supply, power supply, ventilation and air conditioning, smoke removal and fire extinguishing, facade electric lighting will be replaced.
The historical planning and interiors will be restored, including plaster stucco decoration, plastering of walls and ceilings. In the auditorium and foyer, wood parquet will be recreated. Also, administrative, utility and technical premises, buffets for spectators and theater staff will be repaired.
Mechanical equipment will be replaced on the stage, including a tablet, as well as staged lighting, sound and sound reinforcement systems, an electric drive for mechanics, video display and director’s communication.
New chairs will be installed in the auditorium. In addition, the decoration of the stage space and theatrical premises (stage clothes), the decorative fabric decoration of the dome of the auditorium will be replaced.
Now, in the premises of the theater, late partitions and wall cladding are being dismantled, radial partitions are installed according to templates, paint is removed from the stucco molding framing the stage portal and the mezzanine fence. In the halls of the first floor, ceiling cornices and rosettes have been cleared, minor losses have been replenished. Scaffolding has been installed to restore the picturesque panel.
The restoration of the Variety Theater will contribute to the creation of a high-quality urban environment on Balchug Island. Here, the restoration of HPP-2 is also being completed and the Sofiyskaya, Raushskaya, Sadovnicheskaya, Kosmodamianskaya embankments and adjacent Sadovnicheskaya Street, Komissariatsky, Faleevsky, First and Second Raushsky lanes and Repinsky square are being improved.
The Variety Theater was founded in 1954 on the initiative of a group of artists headed by Nikolai Smirnov-Sokolsky. In February 1961, the institution moved to its current home – the historical complex “House on the Embankment”, erected in 1928-1931 according to the project of the architect Boris Iofan.
Such famous artists as Rina Zelenaya and Arkady Raikin, Mikhail Zhvanetsky and Semyon Altov, Iosif Kobzon and Alla Pugacheva, Raymond Pauls and Yuri Saulsky, Evgeny Yevtushenko, Andrey Dementyev, Robert Rozhdestvensky and many others performed on the stage of the Variety Theater.
The theater was staffed by directors Alexander Konnikov (he directed the theater from 1970 to 1983), Boris Levinson, Pavel Chomsky, Alexander Shirvindt, Mark Rozovsky, Roman Viktyuk and Evgeny Lazarev, entertainer Boris Brunov (he headed the theater from 1983 to 1997).
For almost a quarter of a century, since 1997, People’s Artist of Russia Gennady Khazanov has been the artistic director of the Moscow State Variety Theater.
There are about 250 theaters in Moscow, of which 13 are federal and 82 city ones, the rest are private.
In 2020, the performing arts became one of the industries hardest hit by the COVID-19 pandemic. After the restrictions imposed last year, theaters operated in-person for only 154 days. Nevertheless, in 2020 they were able to hold 15.1 thousand performances, of which 173 were premieres. They were watched by 2.6 million people.
The Moscow government provided the capital’s theaters with financial support, which made it possible to fully preserve the teams and the level of workers’ wages. The comprehensive modernization of the material and technical base also continued.
As of January 1, 2011, only 20 city theaters (24 percent) were in satisfactory condition. The remaining 62 theaters (76 percent) required comprehensive repairs.
Since 2013, construction, reconstruction and overhaul of 78 buildings of 33 city theaters have been completed. Among them are the Kuklachev Cat Theater, the Nikitsky Gate Theater, The Shadow, the Stanislavsky Electrotheatre, the Taganka Theater, the Pokrovka Theater, Sovremennik, Et Cetera, Helikon-Opera, The Magic Lamp, and theaters of Alexander Gradsky, Nadezhda Babkina, Roman Viktyuk, Armen Dzhigarkhanyan and Oleg Tabakov.
This is not just about returning buildings to normal or expanding areas. Each reconstruction and repair is accompanied by a comprehensive re-equipment of theaters with modern equipment. This gives directors and artists new opportunities to realize their creative plans.
The material and technical base of city theaters has improved dramatically. Today, 52 theater buildings (63 percent) are in good condition, while only 30 theaters (37 percent) need renovation.
In the coming years, it is planned to build, reconstruct and renovate more than 20 city theaters. Among them are the Variety Theater, the Theater on Malaya Bronnaya, the Vladimir Mayakovsky Theater, the A.S. Pushkin, Hermitage Theater, Theater and Cinema Center on Povarskaya. Thus, the share of theaters requiring renovation will be reduced to 15 percent.
For storage of scenery and props, as well as funds of city museums in August last year on the Kaluzhskoe highway near the village of Yurovo opened single warehouse complex, including five buildings with a total area of 44 thousand square meters. Equipment, decorations and props of 26 Moscow theaters, as well as part of the collections of the Museum Association “Museum of Moscow” and “Multimedia Art Museum” have been moved to it.
