A charity event “Your Friends – Books” organized by the Public Relations Center of the Federal Penitentiary Service of Russia has started today in SIZO-5 in Moscow for the donation of more than 2,500 books, which will further replenish the library funds of penal colonies and pre-trial detention centers in Moscow and the Moscow Region.
The initiative to donate books for places of detention was made by the general director of one of the largest Russian publishing houses “VECHE” Leonid Palko and the director of the State Museum of the History of the Gulag, member of the Presidential Council for the Development of Civil Society and Human Rights Roman Romanov.
The event was also attended by Advisor to the Director of the Federal Penitentiary Service of Russia, Head of the Public Relations Center of the Federal Penitentiary Service of Russia Ilyas Ermolaev, Head of the Federal Penitentiary Service of Russia for Moscow Major General of the Internal Service Sergei Moroz, Head of the Federal Penitentiary Service of Russia for the Moscow Region Major General of the Internal Service Alexander Vetrov, Chairman of the Union Writers of Russia Nikolai Ivanov, editor-in-chief of the publishing house “VECHE”, Deputy Chairman of the Union of Writers of Russia Sergei Dmitriev, chairmen of the Moscow POC Georgy Volkov and the POC of the Moscow Region Sergey Leonov, journalists, convicts of the administrative service unit of SIZO-5 in Moscow.
About 1,500 copies of books, including foreign and domestic classics, historical, religious, adventure literature, and memoirs, were transferred from the VECHE edition to the libraries of the pre-trial detention center and colonies. The State Museum of the History of the Gulag will send 100 thematic sets of 10 books each to the institutions of the UIS, including scientific publications, memoirs, documentary prose and poetry.
The participants of the meeting noted the special role of books in the life of every person and stressed that in prisons, good books become a real outlet for suspects, accused and convicts and are always in great demand.
After the official part of the event, an autograph session was held by writers Leonid Palko, Nikolai Ivanov and Sergey Dmitriev.
On the same day, the new books reached the addressees directly – they were handed over to the suspects and the accused for reading in the cells of the pre-trial detention center.
The general director of the publishing house “VECHE” Leonid Palko suggested in the future to carry out such actions on a regular basis – with the invitation of famous writers. The initiative was supported by representatives of the leadership of the Federal Penitentiary Service.
