A record amount of work is planned to be completed. Vostochny railway station for long-distance trains will open in May. In addition, construction and reconstruction of 11 MCD stations will be completed during the year.

Reconstruction of the Moscow-Kalanchevskaya – Moscow-Passazhirskaya-Kurskaya – Nizhegorodskaya (Karacharovo) section continues on the Moscow Railway (MZD). This is the largest and one of the most complex railway infrastructure modernization projects currently being implemented in the city.

“We are continuing with the Russian Railways, colleagues from the Moscow Region and the Ministry of Transport of the Russian Federation to implement the largest project for the construction of the Moscow Central Diameters. The first two diameters are open, are already in operation, and show their high efficiency. Despite sanitary restrictions and the pandemic, just yesterday we got a new record for the number of passengers who traveled to MCD-1 and MCD-2 per day. This is 575 thousand passengers per day – a gigantic volume, ”said

Sergei Sobyanin while visiting the site.

2021 will be one of the most important years in the implementation of the Central Transport Hub development program. A record amount of work is planned to be completed. Vostochny railway station for long-distance trains will open in May. During the year, the reconstruction or construction of 11 stations at the existing and prospective Moscow Central Diameters (MCD) will be completed.

More trains and more convenient connections

The Moscow-Kalanchevskaya – Moscow-Passenger-Kurskaya section has long exhausted its capacity.

“We hesitated for a long time whether to start this project or not, because, as you can see, the site is located in the area of Komsomolskaya Square. The construction of new tracks, new railway overpasses, reconstruction of existing road overpasses is required. This is such a gigantic project that we are implementing right in the center of the city. They never decided on it either in the Soviet or in the post-Soviet times. It is extremely necessary to launch MCD-4, so we went for this reconstruction, ”the Moscow Mayor noted.

The project envisages doubling the throughput of the section – from 178 to 353 pairs of trains per day, which will make it possible to organize the movement of trains at MCD-4 Kievsko-Gorkovsky. The number of passenger seats will increase 2.5 times – from 706 thousand to 1.8 million per day. Also, the interval of train traffic on MCD-2 will be reduced

To implement the project, the following main works are to be performed:

– reconstruction of the existing first and second main tracks, construction of the third and fourth main tracks. A total of 16.5 kilometers of track will be laid;

– construction of three railway overpasses on Komsomolskaya Square;

– reconstruction of three road overpasses on Novaya Basmannaya, Staraya Basmannaya and Kazakova streets, as well as a pedestrian crossing at Khomutovsky deadlock;

– construction of retaining walls with a total length of 1.86 kilometers, as well as noise protection works along the entire length of the site.

As a result, Kalanchevskaya station will actually be built anew. A modern transport hub, one of the largest in Moscow, will appear in place of a morally and technically obsolete stop. Two new platforms for trains MCD-2 and MCD-4 will be equipped with awnings to protect passengers from the sun and precipitation. The underground passenger terminal will house ticket offices and toilets. The station will be convenient for the elderly, parents with strollers and passengers with disabilities: escalators and elevators will be installed there.

It will be more convenient to transfer to the Komsomolskaya metro station and to move to three railway stations – Leningradsky, Yaroslavsky and Kazansky. At the same time, the existing architectural appearance of transport facilities of historical value will be preserved. We are talking, in particular, about the facing of the abutments and supports of overpasses on Komsomolskaya Square.

Reverse traffic and tight schedule

As Sergei Sobyanin noted, the reconstruction of the Moscow-Kalanchevskaya – Moscow-Passenger-Kurskaya section has already been completed by 45 percent. The second, more difficult stage of reconstruction will begin in the summer.

“When we started this work, there were a lot of risks. In truth, neither you nor we fully believed that we would be able to cope with such a difficult job in such a timeframe. But thank you, the work is on schedule, so it is clear how and in what time frame we will implement this. I hope that the plans that were supported and approved by the President of the Russian Federation will be implemented, ”added Sergei Sobyanin.

During the year, the section will organize a reverse train movement along one new track, which will allow for the reconstruction of the existing tracks. Compared to the original schedule, Russian Railways has reduced the period of reverse movement by six months – from one and a half years to one year.

To reduce the load on the section, long-distance trains will be transferred to the new Vostochny railway station, which will open to passengers on May 29.

The reconstruction of the site is planned to be completed in early 2023 – a year and a half ahead of schedule. It was possible to bring the completion of the construction closer due to the development and scrupulous implementation of the most tight work schedule.

“In March 2023, we will fully commission this section – 16.5 kilometers. There will be four tracks, and we will double the number of trains that can travel here. At the same time, I would like to note that the latest technologies are used in the production of works. Despite the fact that there will be twice as many trains, the noise from them will be 40 percent less, ”said Oleg Toni, Deputy General Director of Russian Railways.

Today the site employs 700 people and 200 pieces of equipment. The specialists, he said, work strictly according to the schedule.

The Moscow-Kalanchevskaya – Moscow-Passenger-Kurskaya section is located in dense urban development, therefore the most important task of the reconstruction project is to reduce the negative noise impact of railway transport on nearby buildings. To do this, they will make 1.86 kilometers of retaining walls, install noise screens, lay completely continuous paths on a special base with vibration-insulating mats, and replace windows in neighboring residential buildings with noise-proof ones.

“And where the residents asked, the noise screens will be transparent. That is, those who wish will see how the trains go, but they will not hear it, ”added Oleg Toni.

In 2020, trains at MCD-1 and MCD-2 were replaced with modern ones with a reduced noise level. As a result, it was possible to reduce the level of noise exposure by at least 40 percent.

New station for the first time in over 100 years

At the end of May, the Vostochny railway station, the tenth in Moscow, will open. Its predecessor – Kievsky railway station – appeared in 1918, more than 100 years ago, so the opening of Vostochny railway station will become a significant event for the city.

The new station will be part of one of the largest and most modern transport hubs “Cherkizovo”, which unites the stations Lokomotiv of the Moscow Central Ring (MCC) and “Cherkizovskaya” of the Sokolnicheskaya metro line, surface urban transport and long-distance trains.

Most of the long-distance trains that previously arrived at the Kursk railway station or passed through it will be transferred to Vostochny. These are “Swifts” and “Swallows”, running between Moscow, Nizhny Novgorod and Ivanov, as well as transit trains from St. Petersburg and Murmansk, which travel through the capital to Adler, Anapa, Belgorod and other cities of Russia.

The transfer from Vostochny to the station Lokomotiv MCC or “Cherkizovskaya” of the Sokolnicheskaya metro line will be organized along a warm transition, it will take only a few minutes. Thanks to the construction of the station at the Lokomotiv MCC station, an additional exit will appear towards Amurskaya Street. It will become more convenient for residents of the Golyanovo district to get to the metro.

According to forecasts, after the opening of the Eastern Station, the passenger traffic of the Cherkizovo transport hub will increase by a third – up to 74 thousand passengers per day, including 24.5 thousand passengers on long-distance trains. By 2025, Cherkizovo will become one of the ten largest transport hubs in the capital – its daily passenger traffic should exceed 133 thousand passengers.

As a result, the load at the Kurskaya metro stations of the Ring and Arbatsko-Pokrovskaya lines and Chkalovskaya of the Lyublinsko-Dmitrovskaya line will decrease by 25 thousand people per day.

Russian Railways started selling tickets for long-distance trains with a stop at Vostochny station starting from May 29.

Next stage

The continuation of work on the Moscow-Kalanchevskaya – Moscow-Passenger-Kurskaya section was the reconstruction of the Kursk railway station and the Moscow-Passenger-Kurskaya section – Nizhegorodskaya (Karacharovo). At the moment, construction of two island platforms and a distribution underground passenger lobby is underway at the Kursk railway station, which is being integrated with the existing tunnels. There will be several exits from the new lobby: to two new, one reconstructed platform and to Kazakova Street.

An additional fourth main track will be built between the Kursk railway station and the Nizhegorodskaya railway station. Its length will be 3.3 kilometers. Bridges and overpasses are being erected across the Yauza River, Volochaevskaya Street and Entuziastov Highway. The plans include updating the track infrastructure of the Moscow-Passenger-Kurskaya station (Kursk railway station). The work is going to be completed in 2023-2024.

MCD-4 “Kievsko-Gorkovsky”

The total length of MCD-4 “Kievsko-Gorkovsky” will be 86 kilometers, there will be 37 stopping points. The end stations of the diameter will be Aprelevka Kievsky direction and Zheleznodorozhny Gorkovsky direction of the Moscow railway. From 18 stations, it will be possible to make transfers at metro stations, the Moscow Central Ring and Moscow Central Diameters.

The fourth diameter is expected to open in 2023. Modern comfortable MCD-4 trains will run at intervals of up to five to six minutes during peak hours and without daily breaks. The train fleet is planned to be renewed by 2025.

The daily passenger traffic of the fourth diameter can reach 455 thousand people, which is 84 percent more than the current figure. The opening of MCD-4 will improve the transport situation in 23 districts of Moscow, where more than 2.5 million people live. Residents of the Moscow region Aprelevka, Reutov, Zheleznodorozhny and other nearby settlements will be able to get to the capital more conveniently.

Travel time for residents of the Moscow region will be reduced to 13 percent, and for residents of Moscow – up to 38 percent. Due to the redistribution of passenger traffic, sections of eight metro lines will be unloaded – Koltseva, Zamoskvoretskaya, Kalininsko-Solntsevskaya, Filevskaya, Tagansko-Krasnopresnenskaya, Lyublinsko-Dmitrovskaya, Serpukhovsko-Timiryazevskaya and Kaluzhsko-Rizhskaya.

Outbound highways – Kievskoe, Borovskoe, Kosinskoe, Nosovikhinskoe highways and Entuziastov highway will be unloaded for more than five thousand cars per day.

Plans for the year

In addition to continuing the construction and reconstruction of tracks, in 2021 it is planned to complete work at the Central Transport Hub at 12 city stations:

– Bakovka MCD-1 (the station was opened on January 14, 2021);

– Printers MCD-2;

– Shchukinskaya MCD-2;

– Aminevskaya MCD-4;

– Aprelevka MCD-4;

– Vnukovo MCD-4;

– Kokoshkine MCD-4;

– Matveevskaya MCD-4;

– Meshcherskaya MCD-4;

– Minsk MCD-4;

– Tolstopaltseve MCD-4;

– Vostochny railway station as part of the Cherkizovo TPU.

A new southern lobby will open at Okruzhnaya MCD-1 station. The MCC plans to open additional lobbies at the ZIL and Lokomotiv stations, as well as two transit pedestrian crossings across the railway tracks in the alignment of Vrubel Street and Starokoptevsky Lane. In addition, the possibility of launching a double-decker train at the MCC is being considered as an experiment, which will increase the number of seats for passengers.
