March 24-25 this year A special session of the Joint United Nations Program on HIV / AIDS Program and Coordination Council (UNAIDS) was held in a virtual format, dedicated to the adoption of the new Global Strategy to Fight AIDS for 2021-2026 developed by the UNAIDS Secretariat.
A Russian interdepartmental delegation took part in the work of the special session. The Russian side declared its readiness to continue interaction with stakeholders in the fight against HIV / AIDS, its intention to continue to fulfill its obligations to eradicate this disease, both within the framework of national strategic documents and international agreements.
Nevertheless, they were forced to declare their separation from a number of provisions of the Global Strategy to Fight AIDS for 2021-2026. We do not agree with the expansion of the UNAIDS mandate beyond the scope of medico-social activities, including the inclusion of internationally not agreed terms and concepts in the text of the Global Strategy. We note that this document, which is intended to become a guideline for the entire world community in the fight against HIV / AIDS for the next five years, lacks measures for preventive work with young people, drug addiction treatment, promotion of a healthy lifestyle and family values.
