World Theater Day was established in 1961 by the IX Congress of the International Theater Institute at UNESCO and is celebrated annually on March 27. Traditionally, it is held under a single motto: “Theater as a means of mutual understanding and strengthening peace between peoples.”

The activities of the International Theater Institute (MIT), according to its charter, are aimed at “strengthening peace and friendship between peoples, at expanding the creative cooperation of all theatrical figures of the world.”

As part of educational work with convicts during the celebration of the World Theater Day, 7459 events were held, including 3865 educational lectures and quizzes, 1040 theatrical performances, vocal performances, 536 craft contests, and other events (puppet theater performances, performances by theater artists of the subjects of the Russian Federation).
