Resolution of April 1, 2021 No. 520

13 billion rubles will be allocated for the modernization of the Kurchatov specialized synchrotron radiation source (KISS) in Moscow. This resolution was approved by the Prime Minister Mikhail Mishustin.

In 2021, it is planned to complete the design work, and in 2025 – to put the updated unit into operation. During this time, the units and systems of the accelerating storage complex will be completely replaced.

As a result of technical re-equipment, a synchrotron of the third generation with a power of 2.5 GeV will be created, capable of operating in the regime of an “infinite” beam lifetime. This will allow for longer experiments and expand the research potential of KISS.

The Kurchatov specialized synchrotron radiation source is a unique scientific facility of the “megascience” class. It is expected that its modernization will help to gain new knowledge about the structure and properties of matter at the micro- and nanoscale, to solve a number of practical problems in materials science, metrology, medicine, and energy of the future.
