Factory sea trials of the Project 636.3 Magadan diesel-electric submarine (diesel-electric submarine), which is being built at the Admiralty Shipyards (part of the United Shipbuilding Corporation), is scheduled to begin in June this year. At present, the submarine, after being launched, is at the final stage of completion at the pier of the plant.

The crew of the diesel-electric submarine “Magadan” will arrive in St. Petersburg at the end of April to settle on it and then provide all stages of testing. The crew is currently undergoing comprehensive training at the Naval Training Center in Obninsk. This was reported to the Commander-in-Chief of the Navy, Admiral Nikolai Yevmenov, at a working meeting, where issues of submarine shipbuilding were considered.

Earlier, on March 26, in St. Petersburg at the “Admiralteiskie Verfi” enterprise, a solemn ceremony of launching the newest large diesel-electric submarine “Magadan” of project 636.3, being built for the Russian Navy, took place.

Magadan, the third submarine in the series being built at Admiralty Shipyards for the Pacific Fleet, was laid down on November 1, 2019. The first ship, Petropavlovsk-Kamchatsky, was handed over to the Russian Navy on November 25, 2019. The Volkhov submarine, the second in the series, entered the Pacific Fleet on October 24, 2020. The launch of the fourth Ufa submarine is scheduled for the end of this year.

The contract for the construction of the series was signed in September 2016, which was a continuation of the implementation of the long-term plan of the Ministry of Defense of the Russian Federation to restore the combat readiness of the country’s Navy and the program to improve diesel-electric submarines.

Submarines of the modified 636 project have a higher (compared to previous projects) combat effectiveness. The world priority of ships of this class in the field of non-nuclear submarine building is provided by the optimal combination of acoustic stealth and target detection range, the latest inertial navigation system, a modern automated information management system, and powerful high-speed torpedo-missile weapons. Admiralty Shipyards are the undisputed leader in the construction of submarines of this class, and they also provide warranty and after-sales service.

Also at the Admiralty shipyards in just six years, from August 2010 to November 2016, a series of submarines of this project was built for the Black Sea Fleet. Since 2014, the enterprise has transferred two ships to the Russian Navy annually.

Tactical and technical characteristics of submarines of Project 636: navigation autonomy – 45 days, maximum immersion depth – 300 m, diving range at an economical speed – 400 miles, cruising range in RDP mode with an enhanced fuel supply at a speed of seven knots – 7,500 thousand miles, surface displacement – 2350 cu. m, number of torpedo tubes – 6, underwater speed – 18 knots, crew – 52 people.
